What is so special about Israel that polarizes people into loving the country and the Jewish people or hating both with often unbridled hatred based on nothing more than media reports and wild conjecture without historical knowledge or personal experience?
Your questions about the legitimacy of Israel and the Jewish nation as well as the nature and history of the "Holy Land" will be answered here through paintings, stories, videos and shared resources explaining the Jewish traditions and cultural realities.
We'll leave politics out of the equation and simply experience Israel, Israelis and life by the Jewish Calendar as experienced by an artist, formerly born and raised in Canada but now living, and experiencing the culture and reality of the Modern Jewish State from my home in Modiin, which is situated half way between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. This is a unique experience of living in a Biblical city but at the same time a very modern, multicultural and innovative city growing daily with a very youthful and creative vibe.
I'm Leah Laker your host and your guide in learning the israel Vibe and the historical landscapes of Israel.

What does it mean to be "a light unto the nations" and to live in the Promised Land of Israel, especially when there is a constant parade of anti Zionism and a historical stream of anti Semitism which manifests in many places and often includes people of Jewish birth or heritage?
As a Canadian, who made aliyah to Israel, I am horrified in the changes I see in Canadian society, which once was firmly established on Judeo/Christian values; upon entering the teaching profession I was enjoined to "inculcate, by precept and example", these very same values, which were later subsumed by "multiculturalism".
Living in the ancient/modern community of Modiin halfway between Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, I feel blessed to be able to live with Jewish traditions and values which have provided me a meaning filled life. How sad it is to read about news stories of where this path has led.

Experience the Jewish Holidays in new ways that connect the past with the present; linking Jewish holiday traditions with living in modern, democratic societies concerned with human rights and environmental protection through ininnovation and creativity.

Chanukah means much more than a joyous family event celebrating a miraculous eight day Menorah light and a commemoration of the Maccabees victory over the Syrian/Greek forces of Antiochus. What do we mean when we call it the holiday of light and how does it relate to not only Jewish history but to human existence? Why was the separation of light and darkness the first act of Creation and what dpes lighting the Menorah teach us in today's world?
Learn to seek and understand the traditions and their meanings for even greater joy in celebrating Jewish holidays.

This website provides a gallery of much of my artworks as well as stories, learning resources, insights and experiences of my living in Modiin in Central Israel. It is a vehicle for learning that I call, "The Israel Vibe", really addressing the strength, optimism, creativity, inspiration, connectedness and vibrancy of Israeli culture landscapes and community life.
It is meant to tell the stories which have inspired my paintings and the insights I have learned through research and studies. I will happily share resources and encourage others in their pursuit of studying Judaism and the land of Israel but religious teaching and political commentary are best left to others more knowledgeable and experienced.
I welcome you to join me on this journey of learning and celebrating life in Israel and to engage in respectful discussion and sharing of insights and experiences.
It has been said that art transcends language and the visual, be it paintings, photos, videos and stories I believe are excellent tools of conversation and connecting. Respectful responses and thoughtful questions are part of the website community I wish to build and therefore political debates and Israel bashing will not be appropriate and there are other websites that will be more suitable for you to explore.
Welcome to Leah Laker's Art and the Israel Vibe.
